NUCLEAR ENERGY: GREENPEACE, ITALY-FRANCE AGREEMENT IN FAVOR OF SARKOZY

(ASCA) - Roma, 24 Feb - According to Greenpeace, the agreement signed today between Italy and France on nuclear power and 'to the benefit of Sarkozy, who is trying to maintain the French nuclear industry,''but does not offer all' Italia no guarantee of greater energy independence - technology and fuel come from abroad - and 'even against European targets short-term''.

The government continues to talk about nuclear power, but has just signed binding agreements in Europe to reach a share of 35 per cent of electricity from renewable sources to 2020.

Nuclear steal 'resources to the development of renewables, now subject to 16per cent, and the result could be a new infringement procedure before the European court.

''Italy has already 'lost train of nuclear power 30 years ago, now seeks to miss that for the clean energy of the future return on a dirty and dangerous technology that has never solved any of their problems'', says Francis German, Head Climate and Energy Campaign, Greenpeace.

Nuclear power has not solved any of the problems, from the safety of nuclear intrinsic to nuclear proliferation.

Even doubling the current number of reactors, which would speed the depletion of resources of uranium found that, at current levels, not exceeding fifty years, the contribution of nuclear energy to reduce emissions would be marginal, not more than five percent .

With investments in more efficient end-use energy efficiency, the effect of reducing emissions would be up to seven times higher.

The nuclear lobby''- argues Onufrio Joseph, director of Greenpeace - to avoid a crisis linked to the marginalization of this technology that in liberalized markets, as in the U.S., and 'substantially firm for 30 years.

The only investment is related to the maintenance and repowering of old plants''.

For the French EPR technology, there are only two sites: one in Finland and one in France, no more work.

In Finland, the actual costs in half 'of the building have already' passed 50 percent of the budget.

The authorities' Finnish nuclear safety in 2100 found no compliance 'during the construction.

President Sarkozy, in the absence of new orders, announced that France, that 'the state, ask' on AREVA - society 'almost entirely public - to build a second EPR reactor in France.

An implicit proof that nuclear power and the market are not compatible: a sort reactors should not be a state. Nuclear power''- Onufrio complaint - and 'an expensive, risky and based on a resource, uranium, very limited.

An evil choice that serves only a few interests of a sector that the market has already 'rejected''.
